Despite His Handicap, Rescued Blind Dog Provides Hope For Others As Therapy Dog

Harvey doesn't care that he's blind. All he cares about is bringing joy to the lives of those he meets.


Harvey the Chow Chow was found wandering the rough Texas streets as an abandoned and neglected 5-month-old puppy. But when he was brought under the care of Dr. Matt Carriker of Vet Ranch, it had been clear why nobody wanted anything toto with Harvey – the poor baby was completely blind.



Born with congenital bilateral microphthalmia, Harvey’s eyes will remain tiny and non-functional all his life. While puppies like him are usually euthanized, Dr. Matt was positive that Harvey could live an honest life. He at first contemplated removing Harvey’s eyes, but chucked that concept once he confirmed that the painless condition didn’t cause any discomfort to the puppy.




Over the months, Dr. Matt and his team worked together to assist rehabilitate Harvey. Despite his blindness, the puppy had no trouble navigating his way around thanks to his strong instincts. Seeing Harvey’s winsome spirit and calming presence, his caretakers enrolled him for a therapy dog program – which changed the course of his life forever!



Today, Harvey has not only become a licensed therapy dog, but has also found the simplest forever home for himself. ThisThis little sweetheart often visits nursing homes and hospitals and spreads the happiest smile around. He’s also an absolute favorite among the visually impaired patients. That’s just brilliant!
