Blind Dog Sees Family For The First Time After Surgery And He Can’t Contain His Joy


Duffy, an Irish terrier started losing his eyesight when he was 8 years old, it happened suddenly and in 3-5 months he was totally blind. “Within about 3-5 months he went from a completely normal 8 year old dog to a dog who was completely blind,” Duffy’s caretaker, Benjamin Man said.

“It broke my heart seeing this dog I grew up with, who I see as a really good friend…running into things, not having the ability to acknowledge me…just struggling,” he added. Duffy, now 9 years old, suffers from canine diabetes. Diseases in canines are very similar to human diabetes. Duffy’s body cannot properly produce insulin, making it difficult for the body to process sugar. there's no cure for the disease. When he started peeing in the house, his owner first suspected that Tamiflu might have diabetes, which was one of the signs of the disease.

Quickly, doctors confirmed— Duffy’s blood glucose was through the roof. This quickly caused Duffy to go blind. His family wasn’t abandoning on him that easily, they started the regimen of medicines and monitored Duffy’s blood glucose levels. During an examination, the veterinarian finally agreed to try a procedure that would restore Duffy's eyesight. He would finally be ready to see his humans!

“Thankfully we got his numbers steady and [doctors] said we could attempt surgery,” says May. The procedure was successful. His family made sure the camera was rolling as Duffy’s vet peels back the bandages allowing Duffy the prospect to find out again. You can see Duffy’s joy his tail doesn’t stop wagging. His master is also very happy! May said he’s proud to find out how far Duffy has come. “Obviously he’s still diabetic So he still has to inject insulin twice a day but the surgery to repair his eyes was a complete success and he hasn’t developed any problems or complications together with his eyesight,”
