Stevie was about a year old when he showed up at Dogtown SA as a stray. Right from the start, he was friendly and outgoing with both people and other dogs. His new friends at the shelter thought it wouldn't be long before he found a permanent home, but, as thepetneeds.com reports, that didn't happen.
Stevie was passed over over and over for six years, and no one ever really knew why.
The adoptions manager at Dogtown SA, Elanza Kloppers, told The Dodo that it was always a mystery to them. "Stevie met a lot of possible families, but they always chose another dog. Over the years, many of his roommates were adopted, and we always hoped that Stevie would find a home too. Being a black dog didn't help either, since black dogs are often passed over in shelters.
Even though it took a long time, Stevie and the people who saved him never stopped believing that his perfect family was out there somewhere.
"When the adopter finally told me that Stevie was the one, I was so excited to tell the team," Kloppers said. "They were so happy!" At last, it came true for our boy. So long have we all been hoping and praying! I also told our volunteers right away. They couldn't believe it when I told them. Stevie made everyone so happy. It was a sight to behold."
Someone finally decided that Stevie was the right dog for them after a long time, and the staff quickly started getting ready to send him to his forever home. Since Stevie had been at the shelter for so long, everyone there loved him like he was their own dog. They really wanted to do something special to remember his time there and celebrate his next step, so on his last day, as he was walking to his car, everyone at the shelter lined up to say one last hello and goodbye to their beloved Stevie.
Kloppers said, "All of our adoptions are special, but some are just so much more than special." "Over the years, we've had one or two adoptions that really stood out, and we've always said goodbye to those dogs in a special way. "Everyone on the team wanted to say goodbye and wish him well.
Stevie was so happy as he moved down the line of his cheering friends. He seemed to know that it was a big day, and he was so happy that all of his friends had come to see him off. It really was the best day of Stevie's life.
Kloppers said, "Stevie waggled his tail and said a special goodbye to everyone." "He has grown to love our team so much that I think he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw all his favorite people cheering for him and wishing him well. We were all feeling pretty sad that day. Stevie jumped into the car with his usual wiggle-wiggle behind, as if he knew his day had finally come. He got into the car very happily, wearing his favorite jacket and surrounded by his favorite people.
Stevie is now living in his forever home, and so far, everything is going great for him. His new dad calls him Stevie Wonderful and adores him, and it's clear that Stevie already loves him just as much. They go everywhere together and can't wait for more adventures to come. Stevie has finally found his happily ever after. It took a while, but he has, and everyone at Dogtown SA couldn't be happier for him.
