A pit bull named Maggie was taken in by the Orange County Animal Shelter in Virginia on July 29. She was discovered by a citizen, according to WVIR, and was severely underweight, weighing only 27 pounds—less than half of what would be considered a healthy weight.

Gina Jenkins, the shelter's director, told WVIR that Maggie "was nearly lifeless, couldn't move, couldn't get up, couldn't walk."

Despite the severity of the animal maltreatment, Jenkins is skeptical that the owner will be identified. They are instead concentrating on showing her the affection and attention that she has been denied: "No one's going to come forward. She will be our firstborn.
